Strelitzia

Genus of perennial plants with ovate, leathery leaves of South African origin. The species Strelitzia reginae, called bird-of-paradise flower, grows in dense heads from underground rhizomes, and the foliage reaches a height of about 1.50m. In the spring months the unique flowers with orange and blue petals appear, long-lasting even as a cut flower. The species Strelitzia nicolai ,called false banana tree, develops pseudostems that can reach several meters in height in suitable climates. The large leaves are long petiolate and have characteristic transverse incisions. The large blue and white petaled flowers appear in late spring but only on adult plants. Growable in the open ground only in very mild areas, they are excellent for indoor decoration, large covered spaces, and conservatories. Endowed with large fleshy roots, they have remarkable drought resistance and therefore should be watered sparingly, allowing the substrate to dry thoroughly before watering. Adequate fertilization during the growing season is recommended to ensure smooth growth. In plants grown indoors, wipe the leaves periodically with a damp cloth to maintain the shine of the foliage.
