Bougainvillea glabra Sanderiana is an often climbing shrub native to Brazil. It continuously produces inflorescences wrapped with purplish bracts along the branches, which have spines at the base of the leaves. This variety lends itself to being bred in various formats, as a climber with supporting cane, sapling, bush and espalier. It requires protection from intense cold and copious watering in the warmer months. Adequate fertilization promotes vigorous growth and rich flowering; periodically shorten excessively long branches to stimulate continuous flowering.
Our advice
Do light pruning in winter, and in colder areas, shelter potted plants from frost with mulch and wrap them with nonwoven fabric
When vegetative growth resumes, administer a slow-release fertilizer for flowering plants
