California Bougainvillea
All hybrids of Bougainvillea x spectoglabra are commonly referred to by this term. Robust climbers with long spiny branches, they produce showy inflorescences composed of bracts in various shades of red, orange, purple, and pink in the warm months. To be grown outdoors only in mild areas, but easy to keep in pots in espalier or pyramid form.
Our advice
Do light pruning in late winter, and in colder areas, shelter potted plants from frost with a mulch, wrapping them with nonwoven fabric.
When vegetative growth resumes, administer a slow-release fertilizer for flowering plants.
